My Words

Understanding the World through words

Dance-poem

There’s a unique dance one
has with new books.
It’s always the same
tentative.
you read a few pages
unsure.
Perhaps the story isn’t gripping.
I’ll give it a few more turns.
If the book is good
I dive in.
If not, I put it down
and move to the next—
Can I cut in?
and continue to dance.

Used Bookstore-Poem

I walk into my favorite bookstore,

It’s slightly dark inside;

I take a big breath and inhale.

The scent of used books,

It takes me back to my

university days–

inside the hollowed halls

of the humanities department,

the graduate philosophy club

on the second floor

always smelled like

old books and

countless arguments.

I’m searching for a book

that will tickle my fancy,

one that will be hard to put down.

I want to be seduced by the Intro, the cover art–

I want to learn something new.

Will it be philosophy, poetics, or history?

At this point I don’t really care. I’m just grateful to be

here, browsing, picking up books by the half-dozen

and sitting down to read.

I weigh each one in my hand,

I read the prologue, a couple of pages into the book,

I want to be mentally teased.

I finally make up my mind after

a couple of hours of contemplating my thoughts.

I speak to my new book, “I’ve selected you out of

all your peers, I found you worthy to be read. Teach me

something new, help me to understand the world I live in,

if you dare, and I love you for it I swear.”

I pay the cashier, she hands me a bookmark

I say thank you and I walk out.

I head to a local coffee shop,

I have to spend some important time with my worded gift.

Because—

coffee and a new used book—

this is what life’s all about.

God, I Need Another Life

20140219-203813.jpg
God, I need another life,
Not because this one seems unfair, though
I’ve witnessed death, hunger and despair.

Not because, I’ve lived meagerly or seen
My share of injustice,
You know, there’s
Plenty of that to go around.

I need another life
Because, the one
I have, I foresee that
time is running out.

I have so much I want to learn,
And, there’s simply not enough time
In one mans life to grasp it all!

Forever 41

I wish there was a store

called, Forever 41

I’m sure I’d be happier

there.

Imagine a place where they’d

Play 80’s hits and Jazz, softly,

Interspersed with books

lining the walls. With soft

benches and chairs, free

coffee and WiFi and nothing

to buy.

On Books

The only time we can
be extravagant,

throwing caution to the
wind.

When, “less is more”,
is
not applicable.

Is when it comes to
buying books!

“The more the merrier”,

I say.

2 Buck Read

2 bucks for a good read
wouldn’t have thought I’d
needed a life changing book.
Searching for a muse
when men cross the road of
life. There’s something inside
that desires more, more than
we can give. On a dust covered
shelf at a 5 and dime store-I
found a book whose pages inside
was God speaking to me. It was
written by a woman and the finger
of-The All Mighty. Can you imagine
a secular book with words of fire?

Books Are My Friends

20130330-222440.jpg

While driving home one sunny day
I thought to myself, I’m devoid of friends…
Besides my family whom I cherish.

Growing up I made a few good friends.
They’re all grown up like me,
with their respective families.
We all live distant from each other now,
occasionally, there are phone calls I randomly receive.

Thinking much harder, I remembered,
I’m bookish, interested in other things.
My wife often complains
that I isolate.
You know,
I think she’s right.

I’m privileged to own many books,
they are my true blue companions.
I invest in words as often as I can.
I’ve done this since my youthful days.
Having books become my honored friends.

Bookstores are a welcomed site.
I like them all, especially the tiny ones.
They are so intimate.
I enjoy walking through the aisles looking,
for my new best friend.
