My Words

Understanding the World through words

Hannah Swims

Hannah is learning
to swim, her fears
were dispelled one
day.

With life vest on-
she decided to
conquer the waters
scary grip.

Her vicissitude
for heroics,

in the face of her
natural instincts
to shy away from
entering the pool,

strengthened her
resolve to
finally plunge
in.

Now, whenever
we swim-

Hannah
like a little
turtle-

paddles
incessantly.

Keeping herself
busy
from one
end of the pool
to the other-

as we marvel
at her newly
acquired,
pollywog
skill.

The Paradox: War Torn Syria

I’m conflicted.

I enjoy military
things;

The weapons,
the pageantry and
uniforms of soldiery
catches my fancy.

I take great delight
in reading about
salient battles;
Thermopylae,
Cannae, Iwo Jima
and Stalingrad,

They’ve become
bookmarks
in the annals
of history.

The heroics found in
war is seldom found
anywhere.

I suppose that is why
when I was younger,
I joined the Marines.

Like many, I tend to
romanticize human
conflict.

Though in reality
war is ugly-
It’s the worst part
of humanity.

When you see the
terror in children’s
eyes in war torn
nations,
it kills
a part of you.

War is palpable;
It has a stench
that marks the
human soul
forever.

Ive seen the pictures
of War torn Syria-
the devastation and
brutality of that
conflict.

I’m saddened by it,

I’m saddened by
destruction.

I’m saddened by
unnecessary death.

I’m saddened that we
live in a world
where peace
is like water
in ones hand,

fleeting.
