Confederate Cemetary

Boys in grey
off to war-
in the autumn
of your days
Like sycamore leaves
you fell.

One by one-
In the valley
Pastures,
such agonizing
despair to see
so many
fair boys
fall.

If not for the
grey tombstones
that mark
your restful
days;

Lined up
row after row;
In perfect cavalry
alignment-

The green grass
of your cemetery
plots
would be
your children’s
playground.
But, alas
it’s not.

Nor ever
will be.
